These cars were Budd built with fluting below the window panels. They were delivered to Southern Pacific for use on the "Sunset Limited" in July of 1950. They were stainless steel with a red stripe above the windows running the length of the car. They were the lounge area for first class (sleeping car) passengers. These "French Quarter" lounge cars were decorated in a New Orleans motif with the main color being watermelon red. There were imitation wrought iron castings throughout the car, card tables, and a curved bar serving favorite beverages and theme drinks. An attendant was available for valet service and a shower for the first class passengers. The cars were numbered 2987 to 2992 and all were sold to Amtrak, except 2987, which was held by the railroad for excursion train service, in 1971.
