These Budd built cars had fluting below the window panels. They were delivered to Southern Pacific for use on the "Sunset Limited" in June of 1950. They were stainless steel with a red stripe above the windows running the length of the car. There were 6 cars assigned to each trainset. The cars had three color schemes...brown and tan, with turquoise upholstery; rose and light pink, with two tone blue uphostery; and two tone rose, with two tone beige upholstery. The bedrooms were arranged alternately in transverse and longitudinal styles so that a panel between the rooms could be opened to make a room sleeping four people. They were numbered 9000 to 9024 and all were sold to Amtrak, except two that were kept for company excursion service and three that were wrecked, in 1971. Plan #9678 had identical window arrangements, but was built with a "blunt" end...the roof rounded down, the corners were curved and a neon tail sign with the train name were the differences. This was to put a finished look on the end of the train, as opposed to an observation car.
